8 Nights Bavarian Christmas Markets Magic!

December 4th-12th, 2026 $3,800 per person, based upon double occupancy.

Day 1: 12/4- Castles & Cathedrals

  •  The Classic Start: And so it begins! Today we left the US behind and arrive in Frankfurt, to kick off our Christmas Markets Tour.  We’re officially departing for Heidelberg to start our Christmas Markets and castles adventure.
  • Our morning begins in Heidelberg, a picturesque college town that feels like it’s straight out of a storybook. You’ll love the romantic atmosphere of the Old Town and the stunning views from the Heidelberg Castle ruins overlooking the Neckar River.
  •  As a special gift from Olde World Travel, join us for a moment of magic on the banks of the Neckar River. We’ll gather to enjoy steaming mugs of Glühwein and local treats with the flowing river and majestic castle as our backdrop—the perfect way to soak in the Heidelberg spirit (weather permitting).
  • In the afternoon, we head to Speyer to visit its legendary Cathedral. As one of the largest and most significant Romanesque structures in Germany, its scale and history are truly breathtaking.
  • We will spend the night in Speyer.

Day 2: 12/5- The Fairytale Village (Rothenburg ob der Tauber)

  •  Morning: We travel to Rothenburg, a town that looks like it was pulled from a snow globe.
  • Afternoon: Walk the medieval city walls and visit the German Christmas Museum.
  • Our Small Group Perk: A private meeting with a local artisan who specializes in hand-painted ornaments.
  • Evening: Join us on the Night Watchman Tour for a lantern-lit passage of the dark, cobbled alleys once the day-trippers have left.
  • We will spend the night in Rothenburg ob der Tauber.

Day 3: 12/6- The Crown Jewel of Christmas- Nuremburg

Next, we’re off to the world-famous Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt! As one of the largest and most iconic Christmas markets on earth, it's the perfect place to soak up the holiday magic.

  • Morning: A short, comfortable drive to Nuremberg, the "Christmas Capital of the World."
  • Afternoon: Head to the Christkindlesmarkt.
  • Inside Tip: We’ll search for the famous "Nuremberg Plum People" (tiny figures made of dried fruit).
  • Small Group Perk: A guided Lebkuchen (Gingerbread) tasting. Nuremberg is the birthplace of this treat—you truly haven't tasted real gingerbread until you’ve had it here!
  • We will spend the night in historic Rothenburg ob der Tauber.

Day 4: 12/7- The Fairytale King's Visions

The Scenic Ribbon: Rothenburg to Füssen

Leave the driving to us and sink into the comfort of our private van as we traverse the legendary Romantic Road. While others navigate, you’ll simply gaze out at a moving gallery of rolling vineyards, medieval steeples, and the dramatic rise of the Allgäu Alps.

  • Panoramic Relaxation: Enjoy elevated views of Germany's most beautiful countryside from your window.
  • Bespoke Stops: We’ll pause to stretch our legs in hidden gems like Dinkelsbühl or capture the perfect photo of a meadow-side chapel.
  • Stress-Free Transit: Trade the GPS for a glass of water and a camera, arriving in Füssen refreshed and ready for the fairy-tale castles ahead. We head towards Southern Bavaria. Prepare for a day of pure magic as we follow in the footsteps of "Mad" King Ludwig II.
  • Neuschwanstein Castle: We begin at the world’s most famous castle, perched high on a rugged cliff. This Romanesque masterpiece inspired Disney’s Sleeping Beauty castle and offers jaw-dropping views of the Alps from the Marienbrücke.
  • Linderhof Palace: In the afternoon, we visit Ludwig’s "jewel box." While smaller than Neuschwanstein, Linderhof is the only palace the King actually lived to see completed. Its French Rococo interiors and the incredible Venus Grotto (an artificial illuminated cave) are nothing short of spectacular.
  • Evening stay will be in beautiful Füssen.

Day 5: 12/8- Monks, Mountains & Masterpieces

  • Morning: We start our morning at the Ettal Monastery, a massive Benedictine abbey nestled in a quiet mountain valley. You’ll be awestruck by the towering dome of the Baroque Basilica and the 700-year-old "Ettal Madonna." After touring the church, we'll visit the monastery shop to sample the famous liqueurs and beer crafted by the monks using secret centuries-old recipes.
  • Afternoon: Next, we head to Oberammergau, the world-famous village known for its woodcarvers and the Passion Play. We’ll take a cable car ride up the Laber Mountain (1,684m) - weather permitting, for a "balcony view" of the Alps—one of the absolute best panoramas in Germany.
  • Evening: To finish the day, we’ll wander the village streets to see the Lüftlmalerei (intricate frescoes) that decorate the local houses like a giant outdoor art gallery.
  • Evening in Füssen.

Day 6: 12/9- Discover the "Bavarian Sea": A Fairy Tale on Water

This morning as our bags are packed, we will venture onward from Füssen to Prien am Chiemsee, a snow-capped alpine paradise where history and holiday magic meet. Traveling in the comfort of our private van, we bypass the crowds and dive straight into the heart of Bavaria’s most stunning lake district.

We arrive once again at a winter fairy tale in Prien am Chiemsee, featuring a 'Bavarian Versailles' and a car-free island sanctuary wrapped in holiday magic.

The Royal Island Escape

Our day begins with a short ferry ride across the crystal-blue waters to Herreninsel. Here, we walk through frosted forests to reach King Ludwig II’s most ambitious creation: Herrenchiemsee New Palace. Modeled after Versailles, its golden Hall of Mirrors and grand fountains are even more breathtaking in the soft winter light.

The Jewel of the Lake: Fraueninsel

Next, we sail to the tiny, car-free Fraueninsel. This island is home to an ancient Benedictine Abbey and a Christmas Market that feels like a well-kept secret.

  • Savor: Handmade marzipan and legendary Klosterlikör (herb liqueur) crafted by the resident nuns.
  • Taste: Freshly smoked lake fish, a local delicacy found nowhere else.
  • Shop: Browse over 90 artisan stalls for unique felt-work and hand-carved ornaments under the island's iconic white onion-dome tower.

The "Olde World" Experience

We conclude our lakeside day's adventure in the charming town of Prien. Whether we’re catching the 1887 vintage steam tram to the harbor or warming up with a spiced Glühwein at the town’s intimate local market, you’ll experience a side of Bavaria that most tourists never see.

Our evening accommodations will be in Prien.

Day 7: 12/10- From Prien Lake Chiemsee to the Heart of Bavaria

  • Morning: Departure from Prien am Chiemsee- We will drive from Prien am Chiemsee to Munich. The ride is roughly 1 hour, whisking you away from the Alps and into the bustling city.

  • Midday: Hello, Munich! Check into your hotel and drop your bags. Grab a quick Bavarian lunch perhaps a Leberkassemmel (meatloaf roll) to fuel us up.

  • Afternoon & Evening: Salzburg Day Trip- This afternoon we head on a 90-minute scenic journey across the Austrian border to Salzburg.
    • The Main Market: Head straight to the Christkindlmarkt at Dom- and Residenzplatz. It is one of the oldest and most beautiful in the world.

  • Festive Highlights: Enjoy a mug of Punsch, listen to the choral singing under the Cathedral arches, and browse for hand-painted glass ornaments.

  • Night: Return to Munich, arriving in time for a late-night nightcap at a local tavern.

Day 8: 12/11- Munich's Merry Markets

  • Morning: St. Mary’s Cathedral (Frauenkirche)- We start our day at the iconic Frauenkirche with its famous twin onion domes. Take a moment to see the "Devil’s Footprint" at the entrance and admire the massive interior of Munich’s spiritual heart.

  • Late Morning: Marienplatz & Christkindlmarkt- Just a 3-minute walk away is Marienplatz. We will watch the Glockenspiel perform at 11:00 AM, then dive into the Munich Christkindlmarkt. This is the city’s largest market, centered around a spectacular 100-foot Christmas tree.

  • Lunch: Viktualienmarkt "Winter Magic"- We then stroll over to the Viktualienmarkt, the city’s permanent open-air food market. During Christmas, it transforms into "Winterzauber" (Winter Magic).
    • Must-do: Grab gourmet street food—think truffle sausages or fresh oysters—and wander through the many stalls of local cheeses, spices, and artisan crafts.

  • Afternoon: The Hidden Gems- Kripperlmarkt: Visit the "Manger Market" at Rindermarkt, which specializes in nativity scenes.
    • The Festive Vibe: Trading our morning coffee for Glühwein! Get ready for twinkling lights and gingerbread everything!
    • Medieval Market: For something unique, walk to Wittelsbacherplatz to experience a Middle Ages-themed market where vendors dress in period costumes and drinks are served in clay mugs.
    • Small Group Perk: A private "Orientation Walk" where your guide points out the best stalls for authentic wood carvings (and where to find the best bratwurst).

  • Farewell Dinner: Toast to a successful trip at the Hofbräuhaus or a cozy cellar like the Ratskeller which is directly under the Town Hall.   Let us toast: "May your mugs be filled with the warmest glühwein and your hearts with the spirit of Bavaria. May the lights of the Salzburg markets guide your way, and the bells of St. Mary’s ring in a season of discovery. Here’s to the miles we’ve traveled together and the many more yet to come. Prost to our next adventure!"

  • Overnight stay in Munich.

Day 9: 12/12- Sad Departures...

  • Morning:  This morning, we make our way to the Munich Airport for our departures. As we bid a fond Auf Wiedersehen to the twinkling lights of the city, we hope the warmth of the Glühwein, the magic of the medieval towns, and the spirit of our group stays with you long after you land.
